Biography

Picture Donna Franklin & Gary Cass

Donna Michelle Franklin was born in 1981 in Western Australia;Gary Andrew Cass was born in 1966 in Fraserburgh, Scotland.

Donna Franklin recently completed her Master of Arts at Edith Cowan University (2005), and during studies was awarded an artist residency at SymbioticA: The Art and Science Collaborative Research Laboratory, The University of Western Australia.
She is currently a sessional lecturer in Cultural History and Theory at The Faculty of Communications and Contemporary Arts, Edith Cowan University.
Donna has exhibited biological and non-biological works in various exhibitions. Most noted of these, includes the work Fibre Reactive (living fungi dress), shown in BEAP04 Bio Difference: The Political Ecology, at The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, WA, Hatched 05 PICA, (Seduction and the Sinister Collection) at BEAPworks 06 at Curtin University and "Second Skin" ENTRY06, at Zeche Zollverein, Vitra Design Museum, Essen, Germany, which is currently on tour.

Gary Andrew Cass has been a scientific collaborator with SymbioticA: the art and science collaborative research laboratory based at the University of Western Australia. As a scientific technician with the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences teaching laboratories, his broad range of skills have been utilised over the last ten years. He is capable of tutoring and demonstrating many aspects of agricultural and related scientific practices. He has worked with many art projects engaged with biological specimens in these labs.
His innate ability to teach science led to his coordinating and running of the Symbiotica Biotech Art Workshop across Australia at Universities and Art Festivals, Kings College London and the University of California at Irvine.
