Biography

Picture Angèle Etoundi Essamba

Born in 1962 in Douala - Cameroon.
She has been living and working in Amsterdam where she first learnd photography at the Nederlandse Fotovakschool ( Dutch School for Professional Photography )
The varied cultural environments in which Angèle Etoundi Essamba grew up have highly influenced her vision of a world from which she draws an inspiration that is mainly dominated by her African descent.
Her photography combines the grace of stylized lines and that of the body with the strength of the arrangement which generally lies in striking contrasts. She draws on her history, influences, perspectives, and personal sense of aesthetic to create and make her images happen.
Her images show both a technique and a theme within numerous physical variations, in turn sensual or ironical, thus evoking a varied range of emotions.
Otherness, identity, duality, modernity and tradition are her favorite subjects. “The human being, and mainly the Female remains the central element in her work, that demonstrates that visual images can still communicate powerful emotional and spiritual values, in addition to formal aesthetic quality and offer a timeless visualisation of universal symbols and wisdom
Etoundi Essamba gained international recognition with both solo and groups exhibitions.
Her first exhibition back in 1985 at the Maison Descartes in Amsterdam, has been followed by many others in Africa ( Cameroon, South Africa, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania ) Europe, ( Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Great Britain,The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden ) and the United States ( New York, Philadelphia, Florida ), including Biennials, ( Venice, Havana, Johannesburg … ) Art fairs (, Amsterdam Rai, Milan , Brussels ) to name a few.
Her work has been the subject of publications , Passion, 1989 ; Contrasts, 1995 ; Symboles, 1999 ; Noirs, 2001 ; La metamorphose du sublime, 2003 ; Dialogues, 2006.
Her newest book Unveiling the veils, shows a new dimension of her work and will be released in Autumn 2008.
Essamba’s work is also to find in several public and private collections.
