Lineart 2011 Lineart is the most important art exhibition in our country and has been taking place longer than any other.
This year’s edition is a special one: Lineart is celebrating its 30th anniversary! And it promises to be an unforgettable year. From 2 to 6 December, art lovers and collectors will be welcomed to the central hall of the Flanders Expo exhibition centre in Ghent, where they can expect to be treated to a wealth of new sights!
Lineart is an international exhibition sale for ethnic, modern and contemporary art. Art enthusiasts and collectors will find 20th and 21st century work and are assured that they are buying from professionals, since all exhibitors are art galleries or dealers. Project leader Ward Caes is at his post again this year. This 30th edition signals a new phase for Lineart: the introduction of a carefully selected group of art galleries to the exhibition. For this, Ward Caes has called in the help of a number of experts from the art world. The step will be further developed in the 2012 exhibition, and will be clearly noticeable in the art on show. This means that the 2011 exhibition is very beginning of an evolutionary process that will steadily raise the level of quality of the current sales platform to new heights!
Photography is experiencing an international breakthrough as an art form in its own right. The 30th edition of Lineart is the best possible place for a first spotlight view of photography, with a brand new section at the centre of the exhibition hall.
Galleries and art dealers from Belgium and abroad will show modern and contemporary art photography by 20th and 21st century artists. In the section, there are presentations of well known photographs but also, especially, galleries featuring young, upcoming artists and their work. This makes this section truly unique. Professor Johan Swinnen, Belgian authority on this subject, will oversee this brand new area, ensuring that only the best work is included.
Johan Swinnen, born in 1954, is professor of contemporary art history at the Free University of Brussels and Artesis Hogeschool (the Royal Academy of Antwerp). He is also a guest lecturer at the Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris III. In addition, he is a photographer and has written a number of impressive books about photography including De Kunst van het fotoarchief (‘The Art of the Photo Archive’) and ‘The Weight of Photography’.
2010 saw the first public viewing of The Moderns, a section featuring top Belgian art of the 20th century. This year, collectors can also look forward to a specific selection of high quality modern art, assembled with the careful guidance of expert Professor Willem Elias. Lineart’s project leader Ward Caes, together with Professor Willem Elias, chose methodically from among 100 artists representing the best of 20th century Belgian art. In The Moderns, galleries and art dealers can also assemble a Showcase or Special around a theme or particular artist. See page 4 for further information.
In 2010, Lineart chose “Bing II” by Panamarenko as its campaign image to draw extra attention to the launch of The Moderns. For the 2011 exhibition, a photograph was deemed more appropriate in connection with the launch of the brand new Photo Art Zone! Choosing which photograph to use involved much careful thought and a committee preselected four possibilities from among the entire body of work to be shown during Lineart 2011. These four were presented on the Lineart website, where an audience vote chose De Onschuld (Innocence) by Filip Naudts as the campaign image for 2011.
Filip Naudts is an introverted photographer who worked at Antwerp’s Fotomuseum until 2002. He was photo editor at FOTO+ from 2002 until 2006, when he began his career as a fulltime freelance photographer. Once in his own studio, he rapidly developed a style of his own, and a number of interesting exhibitions followed. Filip Naudts has a particular talent for creating portraits of alienated individuals. Today, he is one of the most exciting contemporary photographers working in Belgium. Filip Naudts’ work is presented at Lineart 2011 by Galerie Van Campen & Rochtus.
A group of professionals and well known personalities who are also art enthusiasts will be choosing their favourite pieces during the preview on 1 December from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Visitors to the exhibition will recognize these pieces by the label stating “The choice of ...”. This is a fun introduction to the artistic vision of a range of different people.
In addition to their own stands, ten participating galleries will have the opportunity to present a solo overview of the work of a Belgian artist in a separate unit entitled ‘Belgium Calling’. This is a unique chance for visitors to get a closer look at an artist’s evolutionary development, or to become acquainted with some of the lesser known names in Belgian art.
Each year, one artist provides work to welcome visitors to the exhibition. Following Koen Vanmechelen’s “Unicorn” in 2009 and Kevin Toelen’s “street art” project in 2010, this year brings video sculptures from the Swiss artist MARCK (Absolute Art Gallery) to Lineart’s entrance hall. This installation takes the form of a modern campsite, with igloos and tents placed randomly together. Viewers navigate the campsite by passing between them. All kinds of activity seems to be going on inside the tents, and moving shadows of people are projected on the tent walls.
Judging by the scenes taking place inside, the people in the tents seem to feel quite secure there, unaware of observers outside. But tent cloth is no more than a thin skin, transparent and highly vulnerable. This is true not only for observers and others outside the tent, but especially for the powers of nature that are capable of destroying it at any moment.
But there is more. The observer can certainly imagine quite a bit of what might be going on inside the tents. But is that really what is happening, or only what appears to be happening? The shadows thrown against the inside of the tent walls, visible from the outside, create the impression that there are real people in the tents. Will a peek inside reveal ‘reality’? Or would a glimpse at ‘reality’ lead only to a sobering realization of what is truly going on inside? This installation plunges visitors into an extraordinary, mysterious atmosphere.
In 2011, Lineart introduces ‘Focus on Japan’, following Singapore in 2010 and China in 2009. It is not at all a coincidence that the Far East has been in the picture for three consecutive years. There’s something going on there! Lineart consistently chooses countries, regions or cities that are outside the realm of the obvious. And Japan is a country where artistic ambition remains high, in spite of the difficulties it has faced in the past year. Not only are Japanese galleries here to present Japanese and foreign art, but there are also Western galleries presenting Japanese art. There is a wide range on offer, all worthy of the exhibition, representing everything from contemporary work to traditional ceramic design to Japanese calligraphy, and all embodying the heart and spirit of Japan.
Lineart will reward the five most creative gallery stands. A jury of five highly experienced collectors – Johan De Bliek, Paule De Boeck, Wouter De Ploey, Dirk Schutyser and Bernard Soens – will decide on the winners. During the new ‘Lineart Award Event’ on Saturday evening 3 December, and in the presence of the gallery owners, the jury chairman will name the five winning galleries. Visitors to the exhibition will recognize these stands by the ‘Lineart Gallery Award’ label.
Each year since 2007, Lineart has recognized a charitable organization and contributed to the realization of a project. In previous years, these organizations have represented the social and medical sectors as well as international aid, and in 2011 Lineart will support an organization for national heritage.
In line with the new Photo Art Zone, the Germaine Van Parys Foundation will be given the opportunity to present an exclusive showing of the portfolio of Germaine Van Parys at Lineart 2011. Proceeds from sales will go entirely to the Foundation, whose mission it is to inventory, archive, manage, conserve, restore and complete the photo archive. Funds raised by the Foundation will also be used towards sharing its expertise with the general public.
Germaine Van Parys was among Belgium’s greatest photographers. Over fifty years, between 1918 and 1968, she photographed virtually everyone and everything that mattered. Her subjects ranged from Albert Einstein next to the steamer Belgenland, the first glider flight by Suzanne Lippens and Yves Montand backstage at the Royal Playhouse. Germaine Van Parys as the first major female press photographer, and as such was granted privileged access to the lives of not only the Belgian royal family but also ordinary men and women. Her story is one of an emancipated woman in a man’s world, and of the changes in the press world during the course of the twentieth century.
With over 30,000 negatives, the Germaine Van Parys photo archive is one of the most important in Belgium. Thanks to years of excellent care, the archive has been much better protected from decay than many others in Belgium. Professor Johan Swinnen is chairman of the Foundation and curator of the project.
This year, Lineart is again inviting a different organization each day to perform as host institute, organizing a lecture programme with informal talks in the Lecture Lounge at the Flanders Expo. This year brings a new concept: more intimate meetings in a small space adjoining the VIP Lounge. The talks will illustrate links between galleries, parts of the exhibition, a showcase, art form or specific exhibition project, or practical issues such as buying, selling and managing art at Lineart 2011. Public interaction is a central aspect of the talks, and after fifteen minutes of introduction, a further fifteen will be reserved for discussion. A different talk will take place on a specific theme each day from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m., and on 3 December there will be an extended programme. Visitors to the exhibition may participate in the talks free of charge.

Tintoretto - Pombo, Maternity and Passion

Tintoretto - Pombo, Maternity and Passion
The Spanish painter revisits the Marian cycle of the Master of the Venetian Renaissance: a universal tribute to the maternal figure and condition of women in the world.
After the success of the opening exhibition "Passion and Justice", which ended last January, Jorge R. Pombo continues the dialogue with Tintoretto's paintings at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice. The Spanish painter, this time, chose to revisit seven masterpieces of the Master of the Venetian Renaissance which depict as many paradigmatic moments of the earthly life of the Virgin Mary: Annunciation, Flight into Egypt, Massacre of the Innocents, Mary in meditation, Maria Egiziaca, Crucifixion and Assumption.
A universal tribute to femininity, to the woman as a mother, creature and creator, who finds her archetype in the figure of the Madonna.
