THE SECOND EDITION OF THE DURRËS INTERNATIONAL BIENNALE OF CONTEMPORARY ART KICKS OFF
From October 1–31, 2026, the historic Albanian city welcomes 45 artists from 34 countries under the curatorial direction of Massimo Scaringella.
DURRËS, ALBANIA – The second edition of the Durrës International Biennale of Contemporary Art (BNABD) has officially opened with an inaugural ceremony held at the prestigious former Royal Villa of King Zog I.
Founded by art historian Oltsen Gripshi, the exhibition will remain open to the public throughout October.
The Theme: “Periphery: Visual Transitions”
For the 2026 edition, renowned international curator Massimo Scaringella has chosen “Periphery: Visual Transitions” (Periferia: Tranzicione Pamore) as the central conceptual theme. Periphery is understood not merely as a marginalized geographical space, but as a true anthropological and creative laboratory—a source of social phenomena that evolve and redefine contemporary realities through the visual interpretations of artists.
A Global Network of National Pavilions
This year's event brings together an extraordinary international community, featuring 45 acclaimed artists from 34 different countries, including delegations from geographically distant nations such as Colombia, Argentina, New Zealand, and South Africa.
The artworks and national pavilions engage in an active dialogue with local history, occupying a network of exhibition venues across the city's cultural institutions, renowned archaeological sites, and historic monuments.
The opening ceremony was attended by prominent institutional representatives, including Emiriana Sako, Mayor of Durrës, and Lira Pipa, Deputy Minister of Culture, alongside numerous foreign ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps.
Notable projects include the participation of the Bulgarian Pavilion, represented this year by international artist Nikolay Deliyanev with the exhibition Boundary Illusion, hosted at the Nikolet Vasia Gallery.
The Italian Cultural Institute in Tirana is also playing an active role in supporting Italy's presence at the event.
Cultural Goals and Development
With strong support from the Municipality of Durrës, the Biennale aims to establish itself as a global cultural brand, fostering dialogue between Albanian artists and international trends in contemporary visual art. It also seeks to promote cultural tourism and enhance appreciation of the historical heritage of this ancient coastal city.
